Are Earthing Products Safe?
The practice of Earthing wasn’t very well known as little as a few years ago, but it’s reputation has been GROWING, and Grounding for Health has become an inspiration for many blog posts and forums on the internet. This has helped spread the word but it’s also caused a little confusion.
Although Earthing is practiced for health benefits, some people are concerned Earthing might be hazardous to their health. In this article we are going to address these concerns, and learn about misunderstandings that have contributed to this confusion.
Before going any further, it’s important to state that a growing body of research into the practice of Earthing shows that physically grounding one’s self benefits health on a number of levels. Click here listen to the Earthing book FREE in audio format and learn more about these health benefits.
In one source that contributes to the confusion the following statement is made.
Statements like the one above have led some people to believe AC electricity from our homes is directed into the grounding system and also onto the Earth’s surface. This has made some people believe they could be exposed to this electricity by grounding themselves with an Earthing product or making barefoot contact with the Earth.
This is completely false, and has been explained in Understanding Earthing (Grounding) by James L. Oschman, Ph.D., and Gaetan Chevalier, Ph.D.
To paraphrase what the aforementioned doctors point out “It is against the Electrical Code to connect an electrical system directly to the Earth, and any current resulting from a short in the system must be directed back to the source of the current, not the grounding system.”
So you CAN NOT be electrified by AC electricity through the grounding system or the Earth’s surface.
Even IF an electrical surge were to come through the ground system, you could not be shocked when connected to an Official Earthing device. All official Earthing cords have a 100,000 ohm resistor installed in them to prevent any unsafe level of current from flowing through them.
Another concern some people have expressed is the idea that Earthing might expose us to Dirty Electricity. Dirty electricity is described as electrical frequencies that are different from the normal 60 hertz emanating from the wiring of buildings in U.S.
These dirty electrical frequencies, often referred to as transients, are surges in electrical circuits, which often result from the switching on and off of appliances, like heating and air conditioning systems. They can also originate from the use of other common household items like computer hard drives, hair dryers and vacuum cleaners to name a few.
In our modern world these frequencies are coming from all around us. The wiring in buildings act like an antennas and radiates these frequencies out into the environment. In other words you are being exposed to these electrical frequencies without being connected to anything.
The good thing about Earthing is it decreases or eliminates our exposure to these frequencies. You can do a simple voltmeter test to verify this. When you connect yourself to the voltmeter you’ll be able to get a reading of the Voltage you’re being exposed to in your environment. As soon as you expose your bare skin to a grounded Earthing device, or the Earth, that voltage drops down to Zero or the very low millivolt range. Have a look at the video below to see how to do the voltmeter test.
Below is a direct quote from Understanding Earthing (Grounding).
“A variety of measures of physiological stress show that the person who is grounded is less stressed and more relaxed. Earthing generates a shift from sympathetic to parasympathetic activation, reduction in muscle tension, and increased heart rate variability. Regardless of whether or not Earthing reduces exposure to environmental fields, these studies firmly demonstrate that Earthing does not stress the body; in fact, Earthing reduces every measure of stress we have used in our studies.”
It has also been expressed in the same document that the decreased exposure to electromagnetic frequencies is not the most important benefit of Earthing. The important benefits result from the free electrons the body receives when it makes contact with the Earth.
